From 1 February 2015 to 31 January 2016, the GCDH hosted the CLARIN-D Curation Project "Sources of the New: Factual and scientific knowledge for amateurs and experts from the Enlightenment to Modernism" ("Quellen des Neuen: Realkundliches und naturwissenschaftliches Wissen für Dilettanten und Experten zwischen Aufklärung und Moderne").

The CLARIN network (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) is working across Europe to develop research infrastructure for language resources for the humanities and social sciences. Its German branch CLARIN-D is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Nine Service Centres provide linguistic data, tools and services in an integrated, interoperable and scalable infrastructure, while ten discipline-specific working groups inform the relevant academic communities and provide feedback to the CLARIN-D developers.

The Curation Project conceived by the working group on Modern History and conducted by Dr. Maret Keller and Christian Wachter in collaboration with Susanne Haaf and Kay-Michael Würzner did:

  • prepare a digital corpus of textbooks (gei-digital.gei.de/viewer/) and publications by the Göttingen-based scholar Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752–1840) (www.blumenbach-online.de) which will aid researchers in investigating the connections between knowledge production at university level and knowledge redistribution in primary and secondary education,
  • adopt existing workflows to correct flaws in the OCR, add structural and content-based TEI-annotations, and attach CLARIN-D-compliant metadata to the digitised text in order to incorporate the resources into a CLARIN-D repository and enable users to conduct federated content searches,
  • test and evaluate CLARIN-D tools in order to develop guidelines around quality requirements for historical sources.
