Studying Digital Humanities

Digital Humanities (DH) is an area of research concerned with the intersection of computing and the various disciplines of the Humanities. In Göttingen, DH is understood more broadly to also include the Social Sciences in teaching. The study programmes focus on digital skills for text and language on the one hand and images and object on the other hand.

Why study Computer Science plus Humanities/Social Sciences?

With the digitization of all areas of life, computer science is becoming more and more important for the humanities and social sciences. Computer-based approaches can carry out existing tasks faster and more comprehensively, while exploring new research horizons. The blending of traditional research questions from the humanities and social sciences with the use of computer-based tools is the basis for the research area of "Digital Humanities".

Bachelor

The dual-subject Bachelor of Arts offers the opportunity to studycomputer science plus one discipline within the humanities or social sciences. Each of the chosen subjects is equivalent in terms of required coursework. After six semesters of study and completion of the Bachelor's thesis, the student earns a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). The individual combination of modules within the BA is selected individually by the student in consultation with the study advisors of computer science and humanities/social sciences. Find out more here.

Alternatively, students can enroll in the Computer Science Bachelor Applied Data Science and choose Digital Humanities as their application subject (up to 54 credits). Find out more here.

A Bachelor of Arts in Digital Humanities is also currently being set up, with an expected start date in autumn 2020.

Master

Digital Humanities is offered both within the Computer Science programme and within the Humanities programme. Computer Science students can enroll in the MSc Applied Computer Science and choose Digital Humanities as a specialisation (with up to 48 credits). Alternatively, students who choose a Data Science specialisation can select Digital Humanities as their application domain (at least 18 credits). Find out more here.

Humanities students can choose Digital Humanities as a module package (36 credits) from summer term 2019. These packages allow students from the Humanites to expand their knowledge of digital methods, focussing on texts, language, images and objects. For more information have a look here.

Certificate and Transferable Skills (MA and BA)

Bachelor and Master students who want to aquire digital skills in addition to their degree course can enroll in the certificate programm Digital Humanities (24 credits) or select individual Digital Humanities courses offered as part of the transferable skills programme. Information about the certificate can be found here.

Career Prospects

The combination of computer science and humanities/social sciences does not only provide a good foundation for further scientific research in the area of digital humanities, but it also prepares the students for a follow-up post-graduate course or several possible career paths. For instance, the competencies learned are essential in information analysis, academic libraries, and the digital and traditional publishing industries.
